What Is the “Turkey Hair Transplant Plane”?
Photos and videos of the “Turkey hair transplant plane” have been shared widely: rows of passengers on flights out of Istanbul, many with freshly shaved scalps, red graft areas and headbands. It is funny — and it says a lot about how popular hair transplants in Turkey have become. Some flights home carry a noticeable number of fresh patients.
If you are planning your own trip, the more useful question is: how do you fly home safely after a hair transplant in Turkey?
When Can You Fly Home After a Hair Transplant?
Most patients fly on day 3 of the trip — the day after the procedure — once the clinic has checked the grafts and done the first wash. At Bosphoria Hair we schedule the check-up so you can go straight to the airport afterwards. If you have a very long journey with connections, tell us in advance and we will plan around it.
8 Tips for the Flight Back to the US
- Book a window seat so nobody climbs past you, and board early.
- Do not lift heavy bags into the overhead bin — ask for help. Bending and straining increases swelling.
- Watch your head getting into your seat and under the overhead bins.
- Use a neck pillow and sleep upright; do not lean the grafted area against the window.
- Only a loose hat, if your aftercare instructions allow it — nothing tight.
- Drink water and skip alcohol to help with swelling.
- Do not touch or scratch the recipient area, even if it itches.
- Bring your aftercare kit in your hand luggage, including the spray or solution you were given.
Swelling After the Flight
Some forehead swelling around days 2–4 is common and can be more noticeable after a long flight. It usually settles within a few days. Keep your head elevated, follow the medication plan and contact us if anything worries you — we follow US patients online after they get home. More on this in our recovery guide.
Planning Your Own Trip
Nonstop flights connect Istanbul with many US cities, and most patients stay 3 days. Packages at Bosphoria Hair start at $2,750 and include hotel and VIP transfers; flights are booked separately. See our Istanbul trip guide.
Send your photos and we will plan your dates and graft count.
